I want to have row headers. How can i define this?

At the moment the best way to add special editor of the cell which will draw content what you are suggesting.

I noted your wish for us to do it on the grid level.

You can't. At the moment only solid color should be used for background.

You can inherit from the standard string editor (GridStringEditorRepository, GridStringEditor) of the cell and override paintEvent function. In it implement the missing functionality.
